A call for strategic governance in Nigeria

The ongoing Fourth Industrial Revolution is characterized by scientific advancements, connectivity, data utilization, digital technology, innovation, information platforms, artificial intelligence, and various cutting-edge technologies. Governments worldwide are adapting to this rapid progress, reshaping their structures to remain relevant in steering societies and countries. As the landscape of governance evolves, decentralization and reduced state involvement in human affairs become prevalent, emphasizing the pivotal role of peace, stability, and predictability in fostering progress.

In advanced countries, decentralization of governance is becoming the norm, with cities emerging as autonomous centers of life, production, and consumption. Peace, stability, and predictability are the common threads weaving through these transformations, providing the foundation for progress and a decent standard of living. Without these elements, the fabric of society weakens, hindering organized human activities, sovereignty, and national cohesion.

Nigeria, despite notable achievements, grapples with challenges that undermine its progress. Positive strides in education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and economic growth are marred by insecurity, internal conflicts, and a political landscape that hinders collective advancement. Governance structures appear costly, inefficient, and lacking in coherence, consistency, and sustainability.

The country must prioritize the restoration of peace, stability, predictability, and consistency as the core principles of government. While decentralization is considered, a careful examination of governance functions is essential to ensure progress without sacrificing stability. Nigerians need to shift their focus from elite posturing in politics to a grounded understanding of their country’s historical events and governance structures. Acknowledging the precarious situation is the first step towards addressing challenges and working towards a more stable and prosperous future.
