Landslide in Maharashtra’s Raigad kills 25, 84 still missing

Irshalwadi village in Raigad district of Maharashtra landslide Search and rescue teams recovered three more bodies from the rubble on Saturday, raising the death toll to 25. An officer gave this information. The officer said that the bodies of a man and two women were recovered.

84 people still missing in Raigarh accident

An official of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said, “The bodies of two women and a man were recovered from the landslide site in Irshalwadi on Saturday morning. He told that due to this the number of dead in this incident has increased to 24. He told that at the same time, nothing has been found about 84 persons and the search and rescue operation is going on for them. The officer said that one of the two women has been identified as Mahi Madhu Tirkat (32).

Relief and rescue work continues for three days

Teams of NDRF and other government agencies resumed the search and rescue operation at the landslide site on Saturday morning. This is the third day of the search operation.

Landslide destroyed 17 houses

The landslide occurred in a hilltop tribal village in Khalapur tehsil of coastal Raigad district, about 80 km from Mumbai. At least 17 of the 48 houses in the village were completely or partially buried under the debris. Officials said that the remote village does not have a metalled road, so earth-moving equipment cannot be taken there easily.

111 people were evacuated safely in the landslide

It is noteworthy that in the landslide in Raigarh, 17 houses of the village were destroyed by the soil of the mountain. In which 22 out of 229 residents of the village have died, ten were injured. 111 was taken out safely in the accident. Some of them had gone out of the village to attend a wedding, while some were out on paddy transplanting work at the time of the incident. Three animals also died in the accident while 21 were saved.

Difficulty in relief and rescue operations

The NDRF team had to face a lot of difficulties in carrying out relief and rescue operations. It takes about one and half hour to reach Irshalwadi from the bottom of the hill. Officials said that since the remote village did not have a metalled road, the earthworks could not be easily taken to the spot. As the death toll in the landslide in Irshalwadi village rose, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde told the Assembly on Friday that the government has decided to shift people from all landslide-prone areas of the state to safer places. He said that Irshalwadi village of Raigad district was not included in the list of landslide prone areas. On July 22, 2021, 87 people were killed in a landslide in Taliye village of Mahad tehsil of Raigad district.

Traffic suspended on Jammu-Srinagar highway due to landslide

A batch of over 3,000 Amarnath pilgrims left for Kashmir on Saturday morning from the base camp in Jammu, but due to heavy rains and landslides, the authorities stopped them at Ramban, closing the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. Landslides have been reported due to rain in Mehar and Dalwas areas on the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, officials said. It is the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir to the rest of the country. According to officials, in the early hours of Saturday, the 20th batch of 3,472 pilgrims left for Kashmir from Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu in 132 vehicles but were stopped at Chandrakot due to the closure of the highway.
