The tussle over the Chief Minister’s post in Karnataka has come to an end. The party has decided to make Siddaramaiah the next Chief Minister of Karnataka, who tried to weaken the Congress by joining the roots of ‘Janata Parivar’ for almost two and a half decades. He will be seen handling the command of the state for the second time. Let’s know some special things related to his life…

  1. Siddaramaiah was born in a poor farmer’s family. A staunch opponent of the Congress from the early 1980s till 2005, he joined the ‘hand’ he had been opposing after he was ousted from JD(S) by former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda.

  2. Veteran politician Siddaramaiah, known for his patience, determination and candor, fulfilled his ambition of taking over the reins of Karnataka in 2013 when he was handed over the chief minister’s post by the Congress party.

  3. Nine-time MLA Siddaramaiah is being made to sit on this post once again after a gap of five years. He has been re-elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party to lead the party’s government in Karnataka for the second time.

  4. Congress leader Siddaramaiah (75) had already announced that the recently concluded assembly elections would be his last. He also did not hide his ambition that he wants to end his active political innings at the “height”.

  5. The credit goes to Siddaramaiah for sidelining Congress veterans in the race to become the Chief Minister. This time he asked State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar, while in 2013, he left behind M. Mallikarjun Kharge (current Congress President and then Union Labor and Employment Minister).

  6. After a fractured mandate in Karnataka in 2004, the Congress and the JD(S) formed a coalition government. Siddaramaiah, who was then in the JD(S), was made deputy chief minister, while Congress’s N. Dharam Singh became the Chief Minister. Siddaramaiah’s complaint is that he had a chance to become chief minister, but Deve Gowda ruined his chances.

  7. Siddaramaiah belongs to the Kuruba community which is the third largest population in the state. Siddaramaiah decided to position himself as a leader of the backward classes and organized Ahinda (an acronym in Kannada for minorities, backward classes and Dalits) conferences. This happened coincidentally at a time when Deve Gowda’s son H.D. Kumaraswamy was being seen as an emerging leader in the party.

  8. Siddaramaiah was sacked from JD(S). He had previously served as the state unit chief of the party. Critics of the party said that he was removed because Deve Gowda was keen to promote Kumaraswamy as the leader of the party.

  9. Advocate Siddaramaiah had expressed the idea of ’retiring from politics’ and returning to the profession of advocacy even at that time. Rejecting the possibility of forming his own party, he had said that he could not raise money. Both BJP and Congress wooed him and talked about giving him a post in the party, but he said that he does not agree with the ideology of BJP. He had joined the Congress in 2006 along with his supporters. This was such a step which could not even be thought of till a few years back.

  10. Siddaramaiah, at times seen in typical desi style, never hid his ambition to become the Chief Minister and repeatedly, without hesitation, asserted it. Apart from 2004, he missed the “seat” of Chief Minister in 1996 as well, when Deve Gowda became the Prime Minister. Then Siddaramaiah got J.H. Patel, in whose cabinet he was the Deputy Chief Minister. He served as the Finance Minister under both Deve Gowda and Patel.

  11. Siddaramaiah, who has a wide influence among the public, has presented the state budget 13 times as the Finance Minister. His friends say that he has a somewhat “dominant” personality and is determined to pursue his goals. He left the profession of advocacy to pursue a career in politics. Siddaramaiah reached the assembly for the first time in 1983 by winning the Chamundeshwari assembly seat on a Lok Dal ticket. He later joined the then Janata Party.

  12. During the Chief Ministership of Siddaramaiah Rama Krishna Hegde, Kannada was made to be used as the official language. Became the first president of the monitoring committee “Kannada Kavalu Samiti”. Later he became the Minister of Sericulture. He was re-elected in the mid-term elections held two years later and became the Minister of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services in the Hegde government.

  13. However, Siddaramaiah also faced defeat in the 1989 and 1999 assembly elections. He was the chairman of the campaign committee of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee for the 2008 elections. With the defeat of the Congress in that election, Siddaramaiah became the Leader of the Opposition and attacked the BJP government on the issue of corruption and scams, especially illegal mining.

  14. Siddaramaiah also led a 320-km padyatra of the Congress from Bengaluru to Bellary in 2010 to expose illegal mining in the state. According to many in the party, this laid the foundation for the Congress’ victory in the 2013 assembly elections with a clear majority.

  15. Known for his administrative skills, Siddaramaiah led a successful five-year term as chief minister of the Congress government between 2013-18. However, despite being popular due to the populist “Bhagya” schemes, the Congress was defeated in 2018.

  16. According to political observers and many within the Congress, the Siddaramaiah government’s decision to accord “religious minority” status to the dominant Lingayat community resulted in the party losing out in the assembly elections. Then not only did the Congress lose badly in Lingayat-dominated constituencies, but most of the prominent leaders actively involved in the “separate Lingayat Dharma” movement were also defeated. As the then chief minister, Siddaramaiah himself contested the 2018 election in Chamundeshwari, Mysuru, against JD(S)’s G.T. Deve Gowda was defeated by 36,042 votes. He won from Chamundeshwari seat five times and tasted defeat three times.

  17. Siddaramaiah then however won the election from Badami in Bagalkot district where he defeated BJP’s B.K. Sriramulu by 1,696 votes. He contested on two seats. Siddaramaiah served as the head of the coalition coordination committee of the Congress-JD(S) government after the 2018 elections in the state. After the fall of the coalition government and the BJP coming to power, he became the leader of the opposition.

18. Declaring the 2023 elections as his last, Siddaramaiah contested from his home constituency of Varuna and won. He has made it clear that even though this may be his last election, he will remain in politics. Born on August 12, 1948, in Siddharamanhundi village of Mysuru district, Siddaramaiah did his Bachelor of Science degree from Mysuru University and later obtained his law degree from here.

19. Siddaramaiah is married to Parvati. His son Dr. Yatindra was MLA from Varuna in the last assembly. This time Siddaramaiah has won the election from this seat. His elder son Rakesh, who died in 2016, was once considered his political successor.
