History of International Museum Day Celebration

The International Council of Museums held a general meeting in Moscow, Russia to adopt the Day of Museums. After which, the first International Museum Day (IMD) was celebrated in 1977. Before creating this day, in the year 1951, the International Council of Museums held a meeting to “Crusade for Museums” to discuss the development of museums in general. The day was designated ‘to further unite the creative aspirations and efforts of museums and to draw the attention of the world’s public to their activities. Every year all museums internationally other museums are invited to participate in this special day.
