Harishankar Tiwari has been considered as the name to change the politics not only of Purvanchal but of entire Uttar Pradesh. Bahubali politics in Uttar Pradesh or rather the criminalization of politics is believed to have started with the enmity between Harishankar Tiwari and Virendra Shahi. It is said that for the first time in Uttar Pradesh, the word mafia was also used for this Bahubali of Purvanchal. Harishankar Tiwari was a resident of Tanda village of Barhalganj area of Gorakhpur. It is a matter of the 80s, when two youths in student politics started leaving their mark on the politics of Purvanchal. One was Virendra Shahi, who was considered the leader of Thakur lobby and who was considered to be the support of Gorakshpeeth, while on the other hand Harishankar Tiwari emerged as the leader of Brahmins. The enmity between the two leaders started Brahmin-Thakur mobilization in the entire region, both of them continued to establish their presence in the world of crime and with this the series of gang war started.
