New Delhi : Instant messaging platform WhatsApp has banned 36 lakh mobile connections in India to check scam call fraud. This was disclosed by Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav during the all India launch of the Sanchar Saathi website of the Department of Telecom. The minister also said the same thing when asked about the measures being taken by the government to check fraud through calls on WhatsApp. Vaishnav replied that Meta-owned WhatsApp has agreed to deactivate services linked to any mobile phone number engaged in fraudulent activities.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that we are actively engaged with WhatsApp and they have agreed that customer security is of paramount importance. All OTT platforms are actively cooperating to deregister those users who have been found as fraud users. He said that 36 lakh mobile connections have been disconnected for fraud and also their WhatsApp accounts have been blocked.

This comment by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav assumes significance as WhatsApp users in India have reported a huge increase in incoming international spam calls in the last few days. Several users have complained on the social media platform of receiving spam calls with country codes belonging to Indonesia (+62), Vietnam (+84), Malaysia (+60), Kenya (+254) and Ethiopia (+251) . A company spokesperson said that we are grateful for the minister’s acceptance of WhatsApp’s continued commitment to the safety of users. We are actively engaging with the government to continuously ensure a safe and secure user experience, including removing bad activities from the platform.

WhatsApp took this step after IT Ministry’s notice

Last week, WhatsApp said in a statement that it has sharpened its AI and machine learning (ML) systems to reduce fake calls. A company spokesperson said that our new enforcement will reduce the current calling rate by at least 50 percent and we expect to be able to handle the current incidents effectively. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure a safe and secure experience for our users.
