From PMO to Jail: Will Imran Khan be like Zulfikar and Nawaz? Pakistan has such a history

Anti-corruption court has sent Imran Khan on remand of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for 8 days. Imran Khan’s difficulties are increasing continuously. He has expressed the possibility of murder in jail. If we look at the history of Pakistan, this is not the first time that a former Prime Minister had to go behind bars. Even before this, action has been taken on many former PMs.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was the Prime Minister of Pakistan from August 1973 to July 1977. He was arrested in September 1977 on charges of conspiracy to assassinate a political rival in 1974. Later the Lahore High Court released him. However, he was arrested again after three days under Martial Law Regulation 12. Later on 4 April 1979, he was hanged.

Benazir Bhutto was the Prime Minister of Pakistan twice from December 1988 to August 1990 and from October 1993 to November 1996. After her brother’s death in August 1985, she returned to Pakistan and was placed under house arrest for a period of 90 days. He was arrested on Independence Day in 1986, 1998, 1999 and again in 2007 for criticizing the government at a rally in Karachi. In 1999, he was sentenced to five years on charges of corruption. He was assassinated in a suicide attack in 2007.

nawaz sharif

Nawaz Sharif was the Prime Minister of Pakistan thrice. However, he had to lose power after the 1999 Kargil war. After being exiled by General Pervez Musharraf in 1999, he returned to Pakistan. However, upon arrival at the Islamabad airport, he was arrested and sent to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to serve the remaining three years of exile. Nawaz was later sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of corruption. His sentence was suspended by the court after two months of imprisonment. In 2018, Sharif was given a seven-year sentence for ownership of steel mills in Saudi Arabia and was jailed again. He was allowed to leave the country for medical treatment in November 2019 and has not returned to Pakistan since then.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was the Prime Minister of Pakistan from January 2017 to May 2018. He was arrested on July 19 in 2013 on corruption charges. He was taken into custody by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) along with a 12-member team. However, he was later released on bail and released from Adiala Jail on February 27, 2020.

shehbaz sharif

Shahbaz Sharif also had to go to jail. Shahbaz is currently the Prime Minister of Pakistan. He was taken into custody on September 28, 2020 in the NAB money laundering case. He was kept in custody for about seven months.

Imran Khan arrested from outside Islamabad court

Imran Khan (70) was arrested by the paramilitary force on Tuesday in the Islamabad High Court premises. Later, the court sent him on remand for 8 days. Khan is facing allegations of buying gifts, including an expensive watch, from Toshakhana during his tenure as prime minister and selling them for profit. The case against him was filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan last year.

Actually Toshakhana was established in 1974. This department comes under the administrative control of Cabinet Division. Expensive gifts received by rulers, parliamentarians, bureaucrats and officials from heads of government of other countries and foreign dignitaries are kept in the Toshakhana.
