New Delhi, May 12 (Hindustan Times). The Supreme Court stayed the promotion of 68 judicial officers in Gujarat. A bench headed by Justice MR Shah directed that pending final orders, these judicial officers be sent back to their original posts. Among these 68 judicial officers, that judge Harish Hasmukhbhai Verma is also included, who convicted Rahul Gandhi in the defamation case.

Actually, these 68 judges have been promoted on the basis of 65 percent quota rule. This decision of promotion has been challenged by two judicial officers of the senior civil judge cadre, Ravikumar Mehta and Sachin Pratapraya Mehta. The petition has sought a direction to quash the list issued by the Gujarat High Court on March 10 and the notification of his appointment by the state government. The petition has also sought a direction to the Gujarat High Court to issue a fresh list on the basis of merit and seniority for appointment.
