Nowadays ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce) is being discussed a lot. Due to its uniqueness, it is becoming a challenge for various e-commerce websites and food delivery platforms. For example, if you order four burgers and four large fries from McDonald’s through Swiggy and Zomato, it costs Rs 702 and Rs 768 respectively, while you will get the same on ONDC for Rs 639. Especially, this difference in prices is being seen in the case of almost all food items.

How does ONDC work

Actually, ONDC is such an open platform where any person can buy or sell goods. For this, he will not have to depend on any other app. Any restaurant owner can sell food directly to the customer through this. From ordering food to online shopping, everything is possible from here. Usually private e-commerce platforms charge a one-time fee from sellers. Apart from this, they take commission for every order. At present no such commission has to be paid on ONDC. ONDC is an initiative of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

What are the benefits to the consumers

It is being called the UPI of the shopping world. There is a level playing field for the seller and the buyer of goods on ONDC. When you search for a product on the platform of any seller registered on ONDC, you will start seeing similar products of all other sellers registered on ONDC in the search result. For this, you will not need to go to other vendors’ platforms. In such a situation, where the price of that product will be the lowest, you can buy it from there. Such facility is not available on any private e-commerce platform. The consumer has access to the list of all vendors present on the ONDC network.

Challenge made for Swiggy-Zomato

Experts believe that it is because of ONDC that Zomato’s stock is declining because investors are feeling that due to this food delivery platforms like Zomato will be affected.

Small businessmen will be able to do business

ONDC has democratized e-commerce and is giving opportunities to small businessmen for e-commerce. Small businessmen are unable to spend much money on private e-commerce platforms, their visibility decreases, but this will not happen on ONDC. Every merchant registered here will be visible on all buyer apps. ONDC features include dynamic pricing, inventory management and reduced delivery costs. Through ONDC, small vendors will also be able to sell goods through any app that supports ONDC.

No app will have monopoly

ONDC is not a platform or app on which any one app has rights and its rules will apply. Many companies and startups are making apps that support ONDC.
