“The Ministry of Culture conservation and restoration of the preserved portions of the street cobblestones, the reconstruction of the lost portions of the pavement with stones of the same type from other sectors of the August 31, 1989 street or of the historic core of the city. Also, the experts convened by the Ministry of Culture believe that the most opportune possibility to properly value the historic granite cobblestones on 31 August 1989 street is by transforming the segment between Alexandr Pușkin street and Mitropolit Gavriil Bănulescu-Bodoni street into a pedestrian space “, it is stated in a statement issued by the Ministry of Culture.

At the same time, the institution accuses Chisinau City Hall of having started construction works in the area, contrary to the recommendations of specialized bodies.

“We catalog as abusive the practices of the Chisinau City Hall to start repair works in the historical area of the capital, disregarding the opinion of the National Council of Historical Monuments (CNMI) and the National Archeology Agency”.

For its part, the City Hall mentioned that the Ministry of Culture did not come with a contribution to the cobblestone preservation works.

“The Ministry of Culture overlooked the announcement of the Chisinau City Hall which already communicated that the section of 31 August street is being examined by specialists to be pedestrianized. The Ministry does not come with a contribution, but rather was and is for stopping all works and comes only with blockages in many initiated projects. Ideas are welcome, but you can also contribute with financial support to the preservation of the national historical heritage, where the Ministry is directly responsible”, the City Hall press release states.

We mention that on April 11, the specialists of the National Archaeological Agency recommended that the preserved portions of the street cobblestones be preserved in situ, and the lost portions be reconstructed with stones of the same type from other sectors of the 31 August 1989 street or of the historic core of the city. The archaeologists’ recommendations come after two weeks of field investigations into the condition of the pavement uncovered during street repair work.
