Today, I, as well as the people of Moldova, are with the global community in remembering the terror caused in the city of Bucea a year ago. We admire the courage and determination of the defenders who drove out the Russian invaders. We honor and mourn the innocent victims – men, women, parents and children – hundreds of people killed, many more raped, tortured or traumatized.

The head of state had a meeting with the Ukrainian president. During the talks, Volodymyr Zelenskiy emphasized that both states are exposed to threats due to Russian aggression and that therefore Ukraine and Moldova should have common responses to them.

As this brutal war drags on, we remain steadfast in our condemnation of Russia’s aggression, the atrocities we have all seen near Kiev and in other regions of Ukraine occupied or bombed by Russian troops. Democratic states must work together to ensure that these atrocities are investigated and punished. (…) We must signal to the world that violence will not be tolerated – in Ukraine or anywhere else. Crime has consequences. Crimes against humanity must lead to serious consequences so that history does not repeat itself.

Also today, Volodymyr Zelenski awarded the city of Bucea the title “Hero City”.

When Bucea was released, I saw that the devil is not somewhere far away, but on earth. The terrible truth about what was happening in the occupied territories was revealed to the world. We will never forget the victims of this war and will certainly bring all Russian criminals to justice.

According to some reports, during 33 days of occupation, over 1,400 were killed in Bucea, including 37 children. More than 175 people were found in mass graves and torture chambers. Russia denies killing civilians, calling the reports false.
