The Congress on Thursday welcomed the decision of the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court regarding the process of appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and election commissioners, and said that the same process should be followed for the appointment of the head of an institution like the Enforcement Directorate (ED). should follow.

Party spokesperson and senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi also said that now after this decision, the people sitting in the Election Commission should go through this process and come to this institution. A Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and election commissioners would be made by the President on the advice of a committee consisting of the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India.

A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice KM Joseph, in a unanimous verdict, said the rule would remain in force until Parliament enacts a law on the issue.

Singhvi told reporters, ‘This decision has come after strong opposition from the government. We welcome it. This decision is going to have a wide impact. The government should fully implement this decision.

He said that the same process should be followed for the appointment of the director of ED. The Congress leader alleged, “Today the ED has become a brother of the government and a part of the alliance.”
