FSSAI warns traders against using calcium carbide for ripening fruits

Food regulator FSSAI has warned traders, fruit sellers and food business operators (FBOs) against using banned calcium carbide for artificial ripening of fruits.

The regulator said that strict action will be taken if found guilty. For this, the regulator has asked to use suitable substances like ethylene in a proper way.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in a statement said that under the provision in the sub-regulation of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sale) Regulations, 2011 on the use of calcium carbide for artificial ripening of fruits Already banned.

According to the statement, the acetylene gas released from calcium carbide is equally harmful to the people involved in ripening the fruit.
