The first earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred at 9:30 am with its epicenter near Titabar in Jorhat district on the south bank of the Brahmaputra river at a depth of 50 km, a bulletin issued by the National Center for Seismology said.

According to the bulletin, tremors were also felt by people in neighboring Sivasagar, Karbi Anglong and Golaghat districts. Tremors were also felt in Lakhimpur on the north bank of the Brahmaputra.

Tremors were also felt in several areas of the northwestern part of Nagaland, the bulletin said.

According to the bulletin, the second earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred at 11.02 am with its epicenter near Dalgaon in Darrang district on the north bank of Brahmaputra at a depth of 9 km.

The tremors were felt in Udalguri, Baksa and Sonitpur districts besides Morigaon, located on the south bank of the Brahmaputra river, the bulletin said.

The northeastern part of India lies in a very vulnerable region to earthquakes. Earthquake tremors are often felt in this region.
