Sri Lanka has imported 2 million eggs from India to ensure food security. Trade Minister Nalin Fernando gave this information on Thursday. Fernando informed Parliament that the State Trading General Corporation has imported eggs and the consignment has reached here. He told that within three days they will be delivered to the market.
The trade minister said that to ensure food security in the country, the cabinet committee decided to import eggs. Earlier, in January, when there was information about the shortage in the market, the Department of Animal Production and Health had refused to approve the import of eggs from India and Pakistan because both the countries had been infected with bird flu during the previous six months. Cases came to light.
The Health Department had then said that eggs should be sourced from countries where bird flu cases have not been reported in the last six months.
