Argentina rightly fights for the return of sovereignty over the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands, which are considered British territory. This was announced on March 6 by Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of the Security Council, chairman of United Russia.

In early March, Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero said that the authorities had notified the UK about the denunciation of the Foradori-Duncan agreement, which concerns the conduct of administrative and economic activities in the Falkland Islands.

“The paper, by historical standards, is quite fresh – 2016. But in political terms, it is rotten and stinks <…>. The focus of Buenos Aires on continuing the just struggle for the return of sovereignty over the disputed territories clearly showed a course towards strengthening the legal personality of states, ”he wrote in articlepublished on the United Russia website.

He stressed that the main reason for such a struggle is that truly sovereign states are no longer afraid of the dictates of the West.

Own national interests outweigh the risks of sanctions opposition, Medvedev added.

At the same time, British Foreign Secretary Cleverley has already reacted to Cafiero’s message and declared that the Falkland Islands belong to Britain.

In turn, the academic director of the HSE Postgraduate School of International Relations and Foreign Regional Studies, Sergei Shein, told Izvestiya that a break in relations between Argentina and the UK should not be expected.

In addition, he pointed out that in Argentina there are periodic demands that the islands belong to them and “the British are used to it.”

The Falkland Islands are located in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Great Britain annexed them in 1833. For almost 200 years, the islands have been the subject of a territorial dispute between Argentina and Great Britain. In April 1982, a war broke out between the countries, in which Britain won.

Argentina lost 649 troops, while the losses of the British side amounted to 255 people.
