Tourist dies after attempting to climb Elbrus in sneakers

A tourist from Tula died as a result of an unsuccessful attempt to climb Mount Elbrus without special equipment. The man was dressed in sportswear and regular running shoes. Izvestia learned about this on Friday, March 3.

“In violation of all safety rules, the tourist went towards the summit without proper equipment. The unreasonable act of the man led to the tragedy, ”the Elbrus high-mountain search and rescue squad (VPSO) of the Russian Emergencies Ministry noted.

Also, the VPSO said that together with the man, an acquaintance attempted to climb. She felt unwell at an altitude of 4.3 thousand meters and went back.

Earlier that day, the investigation department of the Investigative Committee of Russia for Kabardino-Balkaria suggested that a fall from a cliff could have caused the death of a climber from Tula. The department ordered a forensic medical examination of the body of the deceased.

On March 3, the EMERCOM of the Russian Federation for the region reported that the body of the climber was found on the slope of Mount Elbrus at an altitude of 4800–4900 m. After finding the deceased, rescuers began transporting the body down to the Azau clearing.

The rescue operation involved 11 specialists of the Elbrus VESPO and two pieces of equipment.

Information about the disappearance of a tourist from Tula was received on March 2 from his relatives. According to them, the man was in the Elbrus region and did not return home. On the same day, the rescuers of Kabardino-Balkaria began search work on Elbrus.
