The Falkland (Malvinas) Islands belong to the UK. This was announced on Friday, March 3, by British Foreign Secretary Cleverley, responding to the proposal of Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero to resume negotiations on their ownership. The diplomat wrote about this in his Twitter.

“The Falkland Islands are British. The inhabitants of the islands have the right to decide their future – they have chosen to remain a British Overseas Territory,” Cleverley said in a statement.

In early March, Cafiero reported that Argentina had notified the UK of the denunciation of the Foradori-Duncan agreement, which concerns the conduct of administrative and economic activities in the Falkland Islands, writes “Gazeta.Ru”.

The Falkland Islands are located in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Great Britain annexed them in 1833. For almost 200 years, the islands have been the subject of a territorial dispute between Argentina and Great Britain. In April 1982, a war broke out between the countries, in which Britain won.

Argentina lost 649 troops, while the losses of the British side amounted to 255 people.

At the end of last year, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev called on Britain to return the Falklands to Argentina. He called British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s words about the need to withdraw Russian troops from Ukraine duplicitous and said that the Falklands are not Britain, but Argentina.
