Residents of Moscow handed over almost 1.5 million tons of recyclables in 2022 as part of the separate waste collection program. This was announced on Tuesday, February 28 by the Deputy Mayor of the Russian capital for housing and communal services and improvement Petr Biryukov.

“Over the past year, when sorting, about 1.5 million tons of recyclables were sent for processing, which is almost 50% higher than the previous similar indicator. For comparison, before the start of the program in 2019, 450,000 tons of recyclables were allocated, and already in 2020 this figure almost doubled,” Biryukov noted.

According to the Deputy Mayor of Moscow, this trend suggests that the city authorities have chosen an effective way to resolve the issue of household waste. Biryukov stressed that even when the initiative for separate waste collection was launched, city residents met it with great enthusiasm.

“For their part, the city authorities have prepared in advance and maintain all the necessary infrastructure in good condition: over 60,000 branded containers have been equipped in courtyards and near social facilities,” Biryukov added.

The official also said that special garbage trucks are engaged in the collection and removal of recyclables.

At the end of January, Vyacheslav Torsunov, head of the Moscow housing and communal services department, said that the city was experiencing a steady increase in the volume of recyclable materials handed over by Muscovites. He noted that in order to involve even more citizens in this initiative, the authorities are issuing leaflets that explain what type of waste where to take it.
