The state prosecutor asked the Minsk City Court to sentence ex-presidential candidate of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and opposition activist Pavel Latushko in absentia to 19 years in prison. On Monday, February 27, the agency reports BelTA.

During the debate, the prosecutor also asked to appoint 12 years in prison to other representatives of the coordinating council of the Belarusian opposition: Maria Moroz, Olga Kovalkova and Sergei Dylevsky, who are now abroad.

“Tikhanovskaya, Kovalkova and Moroz are supposed to serve their sentences in a general regime colony, Latushko and Dylevsky in a reinforced regime colony,” the publication says.

In addition, the prosecutor found it necessary to fine Tikhanovskaya in the amount of 37 thousand Belarusian rubles (about one million Russian rubles), and to deprive Pavel Latushko of the right to hold positions related to the performance of organizational, administrative and administrative duties for a period of five years.

On December 1 last year, the Investigative Committee (IC) of Belarus completed a preliminary investigation into members of the opposition coordinating council, including Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and Pavel Latushko. The case was referred to the Attorney General for trial.

The prosecutor asked all the accused to be found guilty of a conspiracy committed to seize state power in the country by unconstitutional means, as well as to create an extremist formation.

Earlier, on September 5, the Minsk Regional Court announced the verdict to the head of the opposition party “Belarusian People’s Front” Grigory Kostusev, political scientist Alexander Fedut and lawyer Yury Zenkovich, they were sentenced to 10 to 11 years in prison.

In 2020, presidential elections were held in Belarus, in which the current head of state Alexander Lukashenko won. The opposition did not agree with the results of the vote and declared Svetlana Tikhanovskaya the winner of the elections. Protests were held in the country. After a series of arrests, Tikhanovskaya left for Lithuania. In October 2020, she was put on the interstate wanted list by the Belarusian authorities.
