Rumor centering US sanctions on Bangladesh

A number of cyberterrorists namely Zulkarnain Saer Sami alias Chhintaikari (street-snatcher) Sami, Abdur Rab Bhuttow and Colonel (sacked) Shahid Uddin Khan (who falsely claims to have obtained PhD degree from the University of Portsmouth in Britain) are spreading rumor stating on December 10, 2022 the US Department of Treasury is going to impose sanctions on “at least 93 individuals”, which includes members of Bangladesh Armed Forces, Bangladesh Police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU), Detective Branch (DB), Special Branch and few other intelligence agencies.

These cyberterrorists are even publicly claiming on social media platforms and YouTube channels stating on December 10, 2022 the US Treasury Department will publish list of sanctioned persons on their official website at “8 am eastern time on December 10, 2022”.

Meanwhile, media reports claimed BNP leader Iqbal Mahmud Tuku, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Mirza Abbas have been openly putting threats on several police officers stating if they try to obstruct BNP’s planned anarchy in Dhaka city, they will fall under the US sanctions.

Commenting on this rumor, two highly-placed sources at the US State Department and US Department of Treasury told our Special Contributor Anita Mathur, “An opposition party named Bangladesh Nationalist Party has been repeatedly sending dossiers with list of dozens of army and police officers with the request of imposing sanctions on them. We don’t decide on sanctions based on such materials provided by any political party. Such information is always provided by our mission in the respective country. In addition to such materials from BNP, couple of human rights groups also are providing similar information, and interestingly all of these materials seem to be prepared from one place”.

They said, “last year Department of Treasury has imposed sanctions on several officers of Rapid Action Battalion. This was on specific individuals, and it was not on the entire force. Since then there have been discussion between Washington and Dhaka on ways of lifting these sanctions. Until now, we have no knowledge about any steps from the US government in imposing fresher sanctions on Bangladeshi military and police officers”.

When asked, how some leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party and several cyberterrorists are claiming with confidence that sanctions will be imposed on December 10, these officials said, “only they [BNP and cyberterrorists] can address this question. As we said, sanction related issued are not shared with anyone in advance. If any political party or individual in Bangladesh are already aware of the sanction and even names, this can finally turn up as fake news”.

Khaleda Zia won’t come out of her residence

Shamim Iskander, younger brother of Khaleda Zia is “totally unwilling” and “physically incapable” of coming out of her residence on December 10 and join BNP’s rally in Dhaka. He has warned the leaders of the party to refrain from spreading such rumor.

Tarique Rahman wants ‘dead body’ on December 10

Acting chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and convicted fugitive Tarique Rahman has instructed at least two top leaders of the party to “make sure” to get one of many of its activists killed on December 10. He has also instructed party cadres to get into confrontation with the law enforcement agencies so that they are compelled to open fire as self-defense.

Tarique Rahman told party leaders that for the “sake of final success” they need one or many dead bodies.
