Information & Broadcasting Secretary Mokbul Hossain sent on forced retirement

Bangladesh government issued a gazette notification after sending Information and Broadcasting Secretary Md Makbul Hossain on forced retirement.

The notification signed by Public Administration ministry’s senior secretary KM Ali Azam was issued on Sunday (October 16, 2022) afternoon.

It was stated in the notification that Information and Broadcasting Secretary Md Makbul Hossain was sent on retirement from the government service as per the Public Servants (Retirement) Act, 1974.

The notification will be effective as soon as possible for public interest.

Md Mokbul Hossain was promoted to the rank of Secretary and was posted to the Information and Broadcasting ministry as Secretary through an official order on May 31, 2021. Before joining the post, he served as Registrar (Additional Secretary) of the Office of Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms. He also served as additional secretary at Jute and Textile ministry.

Makbul Hossain joined the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) as an official of BCS (Admn) cadre in 1991. Most of tenure, he worked at the field level administration. He served as Assistant Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner (Land), First Class Magistrate, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Chief Executive Officer, Zila Parishad, Director, Department of Environment, and Member (Land and Property Management), National Housing Authority.

Two PGCB officials to be suspended on charges of negligence

The government will suspend two officials of the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) on charges of negligence of duty regarding the power blackout in country’s eastern region.

“We have formed three probe committees soon after the failure of the national grid, of which PGCB probe report has already been submitted. Two officials of the PGCB were found guilty in the probe report for negligence to their duties,” State Minister for Power, Energy and Minaret Nasrul Hamid told reporters.

Talking to the reporters at his ministry office, the state minister said that the government has decided to suspend those officials who were found responsible for grid failure.

“We have also assigned a team, outside of the PGCB, to investigate into the mater, which will take more time. At the same time, another organization was given task to find the causes of the grid failure. What mistake was happened for the power blackout”, he said.

Mentioning three issues in the grid disaster, Nasrul said, “Some people were responsible as they were reluctant to discharge their duties properly. The PGCB has asked to suspend two of its officials who were found guilty”.

“Next, identification of those in the distribution companies, who did not respond properly to the PGCB’s instructions and take action against them”, he said.

The state minister also said that the rest of the investigation reports will be available within this week, said adding, “We want to identify the remaining two issues regarding this incident (grid disaster). Technically we can verify and rectify the going recommendations after getting another probe report.”

Mentioning the electricity situation in the western region of the country is good, he said adding that there is no load shedding. But some load shedding is existing in the eastern region. We hope to go to the better position in the next couple of weeks”.

Responding to a question about gas shortage, Nasrul said, “The price of gas has increased in the international market. We cover 50 to 60 percent of the deficit under the long-term contracts. We have our own gas, which is mitigating the demand. We procure extra gas from spot markets”.
