Exposing false PhD degree of an Interpol wanted terror-funder

Interpol wanted terror-funder Shahid Uddin Khan who has been living in the United Kingdom since 2018 has claimed that he has been “awarded” Doctor of Philosophy degree for a research program titled ‘Military intervention and its impacts on the democratic process of Bangladesh’ by the University of Portsmouth.

According to its website, the University of Portsmouth is located at: University House, Winston Churchill Avenue, Portsmouth, Hampshire
PO1 2UP, UK.

On ‘About’ page of this “institution” it is stated:

We’re always discovering. We don’t fit the mould, we break it. Just as the world keeps moving, so do we.

We’re closely involved with our local community and we take our ideas into the global marketplace. We partner with business, industry and government to set the course for a better future. And we educate and transform the lives of our students to help them achieve their potential.

We stand out, not just in the UK but in the world. We excel in research areas from cosmology and astrophysics to cyber security, forensics and sport science.

Since the first day we opened our doors, we’ve looked towards the future. And we’re here to help you shape it.

On its ‘Do a PHD with us’ page, University of Portsmouth says:

A PhD is a globally-recognised postgraduate degree. To gain a PhD, you’ll need to conduct extensive original research into a specific chosen field.

When you study for a PhD with us, you’ll work with leading experts with extensive experience in your area of interest. You’ll become a part of our internationally-recognised research, and a member of our research community. You’ll contribute to our collaborative research culture, and use our exceptional facilities too.

And you’ll be following in the footsteps of our previous PhD candidates, many of whom have made important, globally-significant contributions to research – like Harry Austin, whose work with Professor John McGeehan on a mutant plastic-eating enzyme is making headlines around the world.

Preparing for a PhD

As a general rule, to apply for a PhD you’ll need a good first degree from an internationally-recognised university or a Master’s degree in an appropriate subject. We’ll also consider applicants with exceptional equivalent professional experience and/or qualifications.

Your PhD will take 3 years (full-time) or 6 years (part-time) to complete, and you’ll produce a thesis of 40,000-80,000 words, depending on your subject area. All PhD candidates need a supervisor to supervise them – and finding the right one is an important part of the process.

For more details on what you need to do before you apply for a PhD – from what qualifications you’ll need, to what your application should contain – visit our how to apply for a postgraduate degree pages.

Ready to explore your PhD options?

There are 3 main routes into a PhD at Portsmouth.

If you have an original idea for a research, you can find a PhD supervisor among our academics, whose expertise matches your own. You can also apply for one of our pre-approved PhD projects – including some fully-funded projects – or explore our PhD subject areas and make an initial enquiry to our postgraduate research team.

Fees and Funding

The cost of your PhD will vary depending on where you’re from, what you’re studying, and whether you plan to study full-time or part-time. If you’re applying for a funded PhD, you’ll have no fees to pay.

As a guide, PhDs cost £4,000-5,000 a year (full-time) or £2,000-3,000 a year (part-time) for UK/EU students, and £13,000-16,000 a year (full-time) or £6,500-8,000 a year (part-time) for international students.

The ‘Our Staff’ page of this educational institution is dubious enough as several photographs of the staffs are missing.

According to information, the University of Portsmouth is a “new” university. It used to be called Portsmouth Polytechnic College, which means that it offered degree courses but was of a “lower” academic standard than a University. Your A-Level grades for entry were lower than those required by an established University.

All Polytechnics were abolished decades ago and became “Universities” but for many they remain “second-rate”, whether they are or not. This historical perception may well disappear as memory of the Polytechnics fades, but it is a fact that in all “League tables” on University performance the former polytechnics tend to be poorer performers.

Portsmouth University has expanded enormously, but that is arguably because University funding is now based on student numbers, not quality!

Portsmouth University is not highly rated.

Doubtful claim by Interpol-wanted terror-funder Shahid Uddin Khan

Interpol wanted terror-funder Shahid Uddin Khan posted a photograph claiming it to be certificate issued by the University of Portsmouth. The certificate number is 00058408. Most interestingly, there is no date of issue of this so-called certificate. This reporter has already contacted the University of Portsmouth asking if any individual named Shahid Uddin Khan has done a PhD course with it.
