The next time some self-righteous reporter in Washington accuses Elon Musk of a “lack of transparency,” they should first define exactly what they mean by “transparency.” Then, once they inevitably fail to provide a substantive answer, they should be swiftly dismissed for engaging in bad-faith journalism. The latest media frenzy surrounding Musk is nothing more than another attempt to undermine his efforts at reforming a bloated government bureaucracy that has spent decades squandering taxpayer dollars.
It’s worth noting that, outside of overpaid government workers with cushy benefits, the average American has not felt any tangible negative effects from Musk’s actions. In fact, what Musk has been doing-primarily identifying wasteful government spending and eliminating redundant personnel-is exactly what a responsible leader should do. His work at the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has led to significant reductions in federal expenditures, with the department making its work publicly available in real time.
Musk’s transparency is, in fact, unparalleled. The official DOGE account on X (@DOGE) regularly posts updates on spending cuts, including screenshots of government contracts that have been eliminated. These have included wasteful initiatives such as redundant DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs, ill-conceived Green New Deal projects, and other non-essential expenditures that would have never received funding in a responsible system.
Despite this, the media continues to peddle the false narrative that Musk is hiding something. On February 11, Musk spoke for 30 minutes in the Oval Office, answering reporters’ questions about his role in President Trump’s administration and outlining the necessity of reducing federal spending.
“What I really would say is it’s not optional for us to reduce federal expenses, it’s essential,” Musk stated. “It’s essential for America to remain solvent as a country, and it’s essential for America to have the resources necessary to provide things to its citizens and not simply be servicing vast amounts of debt.”
A reporter at the event attempted to challenge Musk’s transparency by asking what “checks and balances” exist to ensure accountability. Musk, unfazed, responded clearly: “In fact, we post our actions to the DOGE handle on X and to the DOGE website. So all of our actions are maximally transparent.”
Despite these efforts at full disclosure, mainstream outlets like ABC and CNN have continued to suggest that Musk’s work is shrouded in secrecy. ABC News claimed that “it’s unclear to whom he is accountable, other than Trump,” as if being accountable to the elected leader of the executive branch is somehow problematic. Meanwhile, CNN’s Anderson Cooper insinuated that there was “little evidence” to back up Musk’s claim of transparency.
The absurdity of these criticisms should be obvious. Musk has provided more transparency than any typical government agency, yet the media’s fixation on “secrecy” betrays their true agenda: slowing him down. These outlets are not interested in clarity or accountability; they are invested in obstructing Musk’s reforms in hopes of generating controversy and public backlash against DOGE.
For all their complaints about transparency, media outlets already have access to everything they claim to seek. It is not a mystery what happens when government spending is cut: government employees lose their jobs, and contractors lose their funding. If anyone wants to know which projects and jobs are affected, they need only check the DOGE feed. No amount of additional oversight or scrutiny will change the basic reality that when wasteful government projects are eliminated, those who relied on them will be upset. But their displeasure does not make the cuts unjustified.
The mainstream media’s obsession with Musk’s government contracts is similarly baseless. Critics have raised concerns over the billions in contracts awarded to his companies, but the fact remains that SpaceX and Tesla have been working with the government for years. SpaceX, in particular, has provided results that far exceed what NASA has achieved in recent decades, with functional rockets and cost-efficient space exploration. If these contracts were uncontroversial under previous administrations, why should they suddenly be an issue now?
At its core, the media’s hysteria over Musk’s transparency is not about a genuine concern for government accountability-it is about stopping his efforts entirely. The political establishment has grown accustomed to a system in which bureaucrats waste taxpayer money with impunity, and any attempt to disrupt this arrangement is met with fierce resistance. Musk’s reforms threaten entrenched interests that rely on excessive government spending, and the media, ever the loyal enforcers of the status quo, are determined to undermine him.
This is not about transparency. It is about power. The same media that unquestioningly pushed the false narratives of past administrations-whether it was justifying endless wars, promoting baseless collusion theories, or covering up government overreach-now pretend to be deeply concerned about oversight. Their hypocrisy is glaring.
Elon Musk is not hiding anything. His work with DOGE is as transparent as any reasonable person could expect, with regular updates and direct communication with the public. The media’s insistence that he is somehow operating in secrecy is not based on facts but on a desperate attempt to stall his efforts. If the media truly cared about government transparency, they would be scrutinizing the agencies that have been wasting public funds for years, not the man working to rein them in.
Americans should see through this charade. Musk’s critics in the press are not seeking accountability-they are seeking to maintain a bloated bureaucracy that serves their interests. Their attacks should be recognized for what they are: bad-faith distractions designed to derail meaningful reform. And as Musk continues his work, the best response to these disingenuous attacks is simple: ignore them and press forward.
