In a bold move aimed at streamlining government expenditures, US President Donald Trump has authorized audits of the Department of Defense and the Department of Education. The task has been assigned to none other than Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and head of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk, known for his leadership at SpaceX, Tesla, and X (formerly Twitter), has been granted the role of a “special government employee” and is now one of Trump’s key advisors in an aggressive bid to reduce federal spending by up to $2 trillion by July 2026.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), despite its official-sounding name, is not a permanent executive department but rather a temporary entity dedicated to aggressive cost-cutting measures. The Trump administration has repeatedly stressed the need to eliminate wasteful spending, and Musk has been tasked with ensuring that the Pentagon and the Department of Education undergo comprehensive budget reviews.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on February 7, Trump confirmed Musk’s growing role in the administration’s financial overhaul efforts.
“I’ve instructed him to go check out education, to check out the Pentagon, which is the military, and sadly, you’ll find some things that are pretty bad, but I don’t think proportionately, you’re going to see anything like we just saw,” Trump remarked. The president’s comments suggest that recent investigations have already uncovered significant financial mismanagement elsewhere in the government, fueling expectations that similar inefficiencies will be found in the defense and education budgets.
The Pentagon has historically struggled with financial accountability, with multiple failed audits over the years. In 2018, the Department of Defense underwent its first full-scale audit, which revealed major issues in tracking and accounting for expenditures. Despite years of reform efforts, the military’s budget remains one of the largest and least transparent in the federal government, making it a prime target for Musk’s scrutiny.
DOGE’s involvement in auditing the Pentagon could reveal widespread inefficiencies in defense contracting, procurement, and overseas operations. Trump’s push for a more cost-effective military aligns with his long-standing criticism of bloated defense spending and wasteful initiatives.
Alongside the Pentagon, the Department of Education is also on Musk’s radar. The Trump administration has frequently criticized the federal government’s role in education, arguing that bureaucratic inefficiencies and ineffective programs have burdened taxpayers without yielding strong academic results.
Trump has already signaled his intent to dismantle many Obama-era education initiatives, particularly those tied to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The Department of Government Efficiency recently reported that eliminating DEI-related contracts alone has saved over $1 billion.
Furthermore, the administration’s aggressive stance against unnecessary hiring and redundant programs has resulted in a rapid reduction of government expenditures. By January 29, DOGE claimed it was slashing approximately $1 billion per day in wasteful spending, largely due to the cessation of improper foreign payments and the elimination of what it deemed “unnecessary positions” within the government.
Trump’s administration has also turned its focus to the US Agency for International Development (USAID), alleging massive financial mismanagement. Earlier this week, the president accused the agency of siphoning billions of dollars, much of which was allegedly funneled into securing favorable media coverage for the Democratic Party.
As part of his sweeping cost-cutting initiative, Trump ordered a 90-day freeze on almost all foreign aid on his first day in office. His administration now appears to be moving toward shutting down USAID entirely, arguing that its activities primarily serve political interests rather than advancing national security or humanitarian objectives.
Since returning to the White House on January 20, Trump has taken swift action to reverse many progressive policies implemented during previous administrations. He has particularly targeted DEI initiatives, arguing that they introduce unnecessary bureaucracy and ideological bias into government operations.
His administration’s immediate rollback of transgender protections and DEI mandates has already led to substantial financial savings, according to DOGE reports. Critics argue that these measures undermine social progress, while supporters claim they are necessary to reduce government overreach and ensure taxpayer funds are used efficiently.
Elon Musk’s appointment as the head of DOGE underscores Trump’s reliance on business leaders to drive government reform. Known for his aggressive approach to innovation and cost-cutting, Musk has previously criticized excessive bureaucracy and wasteful government spending. His tenure as head of DOGE could bring about some of the most significant budget reductions in modern US history.
However, questions remain about the effectiveness of Musk’s approach. While his track record in the private sector is undeniable, government operations present unique challenges that differ from corporate efficiency models. Additionally, the scale of cuts proposed-$2 trillion by 2026-is unprecedented, raising concerns about the potential impact on essential services.
The reaction to Musk’s new role has been mixed. Conservative lawmakers and fiscal hawks have applauded Trump’s initiative, arguing that runaway government spending needs to be addressed urgently. On the other hand, Democrats and progressive activists have criticized the move, warning that aggressive cost-cutting could result in essential programs being defunded, particularly in education and defense.
Media reactions have been similarly divided. Right-leaning outlets have largely framed Musk’s appointment as a much-needed step toward accountability, while left-leaning sources have warned of potential job losses and reductions in critical government services.
Musk’s audit of the Pentagon and the Department of Education is just the beginning. The Department of Government Efficiency has signaled that it will expand its scope in the coming months, targeting other agencies with histories of financial mismanagement.
With Trump aiming to carve out $2 trillion in savings, the pressure on DOGE to deliver tangible results will be immense. Whether Musk’s methods will prove successful remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: under this administration, no government dollar is safe from scrutiny.
Elon Musk’s leadership of DOGE represents a radical experiment in government efficiency. While his involvement brings a fresh perspective to Washington’s budgeting process, it also introduces uncertainty about the future of federal programs. As audits of the Pentagon and Department of Education unfold, the results could have lasting implications for how the US government approaches fiscal responsibility.
With Trump’s administration setting its sights on unprecedented cost-cutting measures, the coming months will determine whether DOGE can truly deliver on its ambitious mandate-or if the agency itself will become another casualty of Washington’s political battles.
