The BRICS+ Young Diplomats Forum 2024, currently underway in Ufa, Russia, stands as a testament to the growing influence of emerging powers from the Global East and South in shaping the future of international diplomacy. This biennial event, now in its sixth iteration, has brought together roughly 100 young diplomats from around 30 countries, providing a crucial platform for dialogue, cooperation, and the exchange of ideas among the next generation of global leaders.

This year’s forum has returned to its original venue, the city of Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan. Ufa holds a special significance in the history of the BRICS+ Young Diplomats Forum, having hosted the inaugural event in 2015. The choice of Ufa as the host city for the 2024 forum is symbolic, reflecting both a return to roots and a commitment to continuity in fostering youth diplomacy.

The forum, scheduled from August 27 to 31, 2024, is part of the broader agenda of Russia’s chairship of BRICS, an association that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Over the years, the BRICS+ Young Diplomats Forum has evolved into a critical platform for cultivating horizontal ties between the foreign ministries of BRICS member states, as well as other countries from the Global South. This year’s forum is dedicated to exploring the “role of young diplomats in strengthening multilateralism for equitable global development and security.”

In his address to the delegates, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized the forum’s role as an “effective instrument” for building connections between young diplomats. Lavrov highlighted the importance of youth diplomacy in a rapidly changing global landscape, where young leaders will increasingly bear the responsibility for shaping and implementing their countries’ foreign policies.

Radiy Khabirov, the head of Bashkortostan, also underscored the significance of the forum for international relations. He stressed that the discussions, expert assessments, and constructive proposals generated by the young diplomats would contribute to strengthening international cooperation, forging new professional contacts, and making important joint decisions. Khabirov’s words reflect a recognition of the growing role that young diplomats will play in navigating the complexities of global politics in the years to come.

The theme of the 2024 forum, “The Role of Youth Diplomacy in Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” captures the essence of the discussions and activities planned for the event. The forum’s agenda is designed to address some of the most pressing issues facing the international community today, including international cultural, humanitarian, and youth cooperation within the BRICS space, the association’s role in the global political, financial, and economic systems, the architecture of global security, and the creation of a multipolar world.

The forum’s working sessions are expected to provide a platform for the young diplomats to engage in deep discussions on these critical issues. The goal is to foster a greater understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the BRICS nations and their partners, and to develop strategies for strengthening multilateral cooperation in a world that is increasingly characterized by geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties.

Beyond the formal discussions, the BRICS+ Young Diplomats Forum 2024 offers an eventful cultural and networking program. Delegates will have the opportunity to meet with senior officials from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Republic of Bashkortostan, and other prominent figures in politics, economics, and public life. These interactions are designed to provide the young diplomats with insights into Russia’s foreign policy priorities, as well as the broader geopolitical and economic landscape in which the BRICS nations operate.

The cultural program includes an introduction to the rich history and unique culture of Bashkortostan, a region known for its diverse natural beauty and vibrant cultural traditions. Delegates will have the chance to explore the region’s heritage, offering them a deeper appreciation of the cultural diversity that is a hallmark of the BRICS association.

One of the highlights of the forum will be the official ceremony on the final day, where new members will be inducted into the International Association of Young Diplomats (IAYD). Established in 2017 by the Young Diplomats Council of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the IAYD has become a key institution for fostering collaboration among youth activists from different foreign ministries worldwide. Currently, the association unites more than 150 diplomats, creating a global network of young leaders committed to advancing international cooperation and understanding.

The inclusion of new members into the IAYD at the BRICS+ Young Diplomats Forum is not just a ceremonial event; it symbolizes the continuous expansion of this network and the increasing importance of youth in shaping global diplomacy. The IAYD’s mission aligns closely with the goals of the BRICS+ forum, as both seek to empower young diplomats to take on leadership roles in addressing the challenges of the 21st century.

As the BRICS+ Young Diplomats Forum 2024 draws to a close, it is clear that the event has far-reaching implications for the future of international diplomacy. By bringing together young diplomats from across the Global East and South, the forum serves as a crucible for the development of new ideas, strategies, and partnerships that will shape the global order in the years to come.

The forum’s emphasis on multilateralism, cultural exchange, and the creation of a multipolar world reflects the aspirations of the BRICS nations and their partners to build a more just and equitable international system. As these young diplomats return to their respective countries, they carry with them not only the knowledge and experiences gained at the forum but also a shared commitment to advancing the cause of global cooperation and peace.

In a world where geopolitical rivalries and economic challenges often dominate the headlines, the BRICS+ Young Diplomats Forum stands out as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the potential of youth diplomacy to contribute to a more stable, prosperous, and harmonious global community.
