On August 11, 2024, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi cast doubt on the authenticity of President Joe Biden’s dropout letter from the 2024 presidential race, hinting that it may have been crafted and posted without his full consent. Biden officially exited the race on July 21, 2024, posting a letter to his X account (formerly Twitter) and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his preferred successor.
NBC News reported that by the time Biden finished a phone call with his senior advisors on July 21, an official statement announcing his decision had already been prepared. Mere minutes after the call ended, the letter was posted to his X account. This rapid sequence of events raised questions about whether Biden himself had penned the letter or if it had been composed by others.
During an interview, Pelosi unintentionally revealed her skepticism about the letter’s origins. “I didn’t accept the letter as anything but a letter. I mean, in another sense, there are some people who were unhappy with the letter”, Pelosi said, her words trailing off into ambiguity. She further suggested that the statements in Biden’s letter might not have reflected his true feelings. “I’ll put it in somebody else’s mouth because it was a, I don’t even know. It didn’t sound like Joe Biden to me. It really didn’t”, Pelosi remarked.
This isn’t the first time Pelosi’s name has come up in the context of Biden’s withdrawal. In an interview with CBS News’ Robert Costa, Biden himself acknowledged that he was pressured to leave the race due to concerns from within his own party that his continued candidacy might harm down-ballot Democrats. Reports from Politico revealed that Pelosi played a significant role in pushing Biden to step aside, even resorting to threats. A Democrat familiar with private conversations within the party disclosed that Pelosi made it clear to Biden that there were two options: “the easy way or the hard way”.
These revelations add a new layer of intrigue to Biden’s sudden departure from the 2024 race, which has left many political analysts puzzled. Biden, who was hailed as the most popular president in US history after receiving 81 million votes in the 2020 election, now faces an unceremonious exit just four years later. The abrupt shift in his standing among Democrats and the apparent orchestration behind his dropout have yet to be fully explained.
As the Democratic Party steers this unexpected turn of events, questions about the true nature of Biden’s decision and the extent of internal party maneuvering will likely continue to loom large in the run-up to the 2024 election.
