Amjad Khan was not the first choice to play Gabbar Singh

Famous writers of Hindi cinema Javed Akhtar and Salin Khan wrote the entire story of Sholay. The powerful dialogues of every character of this film are still on people’s lips. If reports are to be believed, Javed Akhtar’s first choice for the role of Gabbar Singh was Danny Denzongpa and he was also offered the role, but he turned down the offer. These days Danny was busy shooting for Feroz Khan’s film ‘Dharmatma’, due to which he could not work in ‘Sholay’. Later Amjad became immortal by playing this role. Amjad Khan died on 27 July 1992.

In an interview in the year 2020, Ramesh revealed why he chose Amjad for the role of ‘Gabbar Singh’. Ramesh Sippy saw Amjad Khan performing on stage. Ramesh felt that his personality and voice were perfect for the role of ‘Gabbar Singh’. He said, “I remember seeing one of his actions. His face, personality, voice everything seemed fine. We asked him to shave, dressed him, took pictures. He looked perfect in the character.”
