The Congress made a spectacular return to power in Karnataka on Saturday, ousting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from its only southern stronghold. In the elections to the 224-member assembly in the state, the Congress won 135 seats in a landslide victory, while the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda-led Janata Dal (Secular) won 66 and 19 seats, respectively.
Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah frontrunners in the race for Chief Minister
Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and State Congress President DK Shivakumar are both frontrunners for the Chief Minister’s post. Both have held a meeting with their supporting MLAs before the Legislature Party meeting. Supporters put up banners at the residences of Siddaramaiah (75) and Shivakumar (60), congratulating them for the Congress victory and projecting them as the next chief minister.
